That would be the inverter's ATS which your friend's 2000 watt inverter does not have; so using his inverter the plugs are ALWAYS powered by the inverter and house batteries.
You have to have either an internal or external ATS, or a manual transfer switch to be able to power the plugs from batteries when there is no SP and from SP (or the generator) when that is available.
