Its about usable capacity. I previously had Deka Marine Master batteries 12V regular lead-acid rated at 130 A-hr. However, i could only get about 50% of the capacity out of the batteries. The new AGM batteries are useful up to ~80% of their capacity.
I went 6V also because the wiring was cleaner. Some people avoid 6V because if one of the batteries fails (i.e. inernal open circuit), then you are out of luck as you will have no voltage. If your batteries are wired in parallel, then you still have 12V, just half the capacity.
