If you want a little rule of thumb...

The color of the idiot light tells you what you can do. Green lights (turn indicators, cruise control on) mean its normal. You're fine. Amber lights mean you're ok, but it needs to be looked at. Something is wrong, but well be ok for a bit. Red lights mean " holy crap! Fix it or we're all gonna die!!"

These are not absolutes, but at least you have a metric...
