They put an oil sensor in the engine that measures the oils 'age' and determines when it needs changing. (At least Ford's oil life monitor works that way.)

Jedsmom: We change the oil before putting it away for the winter in both the engine and the genny. That way its sitting over winter with fresh oil, and there is less to do to get it ready for camping in the spring.

Granted in warmer climes, like Southern California, there is no need to put it away for the winter. Not sure how I'd handle it in that case...
