The book on my said the same thing. Mazda will tell you that their cars cannot be towed. There are plenty of folks on the web that are doing just that. If you want to tow a Miata, I suggest you do your homework and make your own decision.
The odometer doesn't show towed miles, so it seems like the tires don't last long, until the towed miles are added to the driven miles.
