Going to 24 volts will save a little on the solar controller and a little in wire size, but will cost a lot for a 24 volt x 12 volt charger. I wouldn't do it unless you use a lot of AC and you will have a 24 volt converter.

But in any case, what kind of batteries are you considering. If you are ok with FLAs then 12V golf cart batteries are the cheapest $/kWhr.
