Beacher, have you stayed at the campground at west end of the Mt. Whitney Portal Road? Where the road ends? I've driven there and ridden my bike up a few times, but haven't camped. Want to try it though next time I drive to California.

Also, have you stayed or know much about the campground at end of Onion Valley Rd? It's just off Independence, and a few miles north of Mt Whitney Portal Rd. That campground was a lot more open and not as crowded when I drove by.

The few areas I've visited looked great for cycling and hiking. Was wondering if it's hard to get in during summer when it's warmer. I'm looking forward to going back as soon as I can get away for extended visit.
