With all the electronic equipment on RVs these days a good surge protector/EMS, hardwired or portable, should mandatory every time/everywhere you plug in the rv. They are bit pricey but so is replacing air conditioners, microwave, tvs, etc., I know ours has saved us on at least 2 occasions.

For EV's they are called EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment). They aren't really surge suppressors, they are more like a fancy GFI.
They perform two tasks:
- Stop the current flow to the car if there is a ground fault
- Inform the car of the max current available on the circuit
The
Clipper Creek pictured (that I use in campgrounds) is a 20 amp unit: It tells the car "you can charge at 240V @ 20a". At that rate it puts about 20 miles an hour back into the Bolt. (On the road a "fast" charger would charge about 100 miles in 30 minutes.)
I do have a surge suppressor for the RV; just didn't have it plugged in at the time.
