One that I've read, but haven't tried, is to splash the upper surface of the awning with soapy water and retracting the awning without rinsing the soap off. The rolling action transfers soapy water to the underside. Let it sit for a few minutes - don't let it dry - then reopen the awning and rinse off both the upper and underside thoroughly.

Like I said, I haven't tried it yet. YMMV.
