We experienced a similar problem and it turned out that the slide topper awning release latch was getting caught and preventing the awning from unrolling which also prevented the slide from opening. The setscrew in the latch had loosened enough to allow the latch to swing sideways, which is how it got caught on the bracket that holds the awning roll.
