IMHO if you're willing to spend $20 for gorilla tape or $50+ for a roll of awning tape to use 6" just replace the fabric & be done with it. Depending on the awning size there are several online places that sell replace fabric for awnings, some original quality & some much better, that are suprisingly not that expensive & with another person & ladder it's a relatively simple job.
I replaced fabrics on all 3 slide toppers on my last 5th wheel, the most expensive was for the 12'er at $105. Took my SIL & I an hour to do the 1st & did the other 2 in less than an hour for both.
