Possible the battery froze considering your northern location??
A charged battery will resist freezing far below the normal temps you would see (-70 degrees F range) but a discharged battery can freeze near 32 degrees. Freezing can crack the case... and might appear as 'broken' once thawed. It also could have spilled battery acid in the processes... in the battery compartment and whatever was under it...
