there actually is a reason for the calendar cycle....This I was told by a lubrication Engineer with Texaco many years ago when I was a Maintenance Engineer at a paper mill....we oversaw the lube analysis program that Texaco did (among many other things)
Anyway, I was told that oil is made up of polymer chains....some long, some short. Over time the short ones evaporate leaving the long ones behind. Long enough and you're left with 'sludge'....
That's why they recommend changes after a time even if it hasn't be run a bit.....
