I think the OP wanted to know how to clean the contacts as they are giving wrong indications on the panel. Personally, I only 'clean' the tanks until the level indicator reads close, then I will use whatever concoction to keep it that way, typically the geo method and drive with it to the next destination.
Trying to 'sanitize' the tanks? THAT is furthest from my mad ideas.
