A fully charged 12 Volt lead acid battery will read 12.6 to 12.7 volts. Any voltage you see above that is a "surface charge" and and doesn't really add any capacity to the battery bank. Any current forced into a fully charged battery by high charging voltage causes electrolysis in the battery (AKA "boiling" a lead - acid battery) creating oxygen and hydrogen. The voltage regulators in your converter and alternator usually turn the charging voltage down to low 13 volts when they sense the batteries are fully charged. The converter is better at this than the alternator as the alternator always has a current load when the engine is running which it can not differentiate from the current going into the batteries.
