Because it is 240 VAC service. The problem is ignorant people (some electricians resemble that remark) that wire an RV 30 amp 120 VAC plug for 240 VAC.

An RV 50 amp 240 VAC service is a STANDARD configuration used by many 240 VAC appliances.
