A friend worked at General Motors, his entry level job was replacing bad batteries installed on the assembly line.

Have you checked the voltage on your battery before starting the motor?
If you don't have a volt meter they're about $20 at walmart, they look complicated but aren't.
You should be seeing about 12.5 DC volts before starting the motor.
