I agree the Axis 24.1 couch is a piece of trash. But I am trying to rehabilitate mine before I give up and do what you are doing. I am installing a couple of hinges in place of the OEM ones to let the back tilt back further. One mine it actually tilts forward.

I will let you know how it works.
