If the light is on because the gas cap was not fully sealed, it can take a while for the system to reset and the light to go off. Sometimes as much as 1/2 tank or more of driving.

If you don't have a CEL (check engine light on) and it is only the gas cap light, I would remove it, tighten it until it clicks and then drive for a while and see if it goes off.

If not, then there could be an emissions related sensor problem... although they usualy trip the CEL.
