You are correct that the front fuel tank will drop to about 3/4 full before the rear tank starts to drop, it doesn't transfer to the rear tank the rear tank gravity feeds to the front, when the rear tank is empty you will then start to see the front tank start to drop again.
The generator and the big engine both draw fuel from the front tank.
