Slide Topper

Two part question Our 2017 Thor Ace topper (awning) on our main slide started to tear/pull away from the bracket that holds it to the actual RV. I called around and they are about 12 weeks out to order. We are on cross country trip from Texas to Mass to inter my fathers remains who passed last year. I say that as no way to turn around. We bought it last year so not sure why it deteriorated so quick. We empty the rain when it gets heavy and sags.

1. I see regular travel trailers without the slide toppers with same slides. I assume this one will let go soon, but will I still be rain proof? We have seals around the slide when its out like normal travel trailers. I assumed the toppers were extra protection? Can I put out the slide with a slight lean on my level to run the rain off? (I know I can try it but would rather be sure before we get water inside)
2. Any suggestions on fixes? though maybe a tarp from the roof when parked and expecting rain (also can pull in the slide but it gets tight with us and a 100 lb doggo)
