The standard 3 or 4 stage lead-acid battery charger will drop the voltage to 13.1 to 13.5 volts depending on the temperature of the batteries or the converter when the battery is completely charged. This is the float stage. This is the same voltage of a trickle battery charger or battery maintainer. At 68 F degrees, it takes 13.2 volts to overcome the internal resistance of a lead acid battery. At this voltage or a couple tenth higher voltage there is not enough heat generated to raise the battery's internal temperature enough to cause out-gassing. Leaving a lead acid battery even slightly discharged for any significant time will shorten its useful life. That is why most seldom driven, antique auto are kept on trickle chargers.
