Second the COE campgrounds. They are often our first go-to if we are near one.

There is a book that gives brief descriptions of the various COE locations state by state and the facilities available. Most have electric & water with FHU in some cases or at least a dump station available.

Every COE site we've been to has been very clean and well maintained. Within the last 2 weeks we've been at Carlyle Lake in Illinois and Council Grove Lake in Kansas. Both very nice, tranquil spots with either water front site or view even though in both cases we arrived FCFS without reservations. I imagine in peak season they are busier and reservations would be advised.

Also as mentioned, many nice water front campgrounds on Lake Superior in Michigan's upper peninsula (UP) near Picture Rocks NLP. The southern side of the UP along Lake Michigan also has numerous national forest and state park campgrounds on the water. Big Bay De Noc was lovely when we were there in 2019.
