I've done it both ways.

Adding the oil through the dash is easier, but removing and re-installing the writing desk adds time.

Personally, I favor using a funnel with a hose attached and adding oil from the front. It helps to have a second person hold the funnel. If I just need to add a small amount of oil, I use a quart oil bottle with a manual pump attached.

Two more tips for oil and filter change:

I added a Fumoto drain valve to make it neater and cleaner to drain oil. I also cut the top off of a two liter soda bottle and use that to grip the loosened oil filter. The bottle catches the filter oil and filter.
