Yes, the amplifier is in the batwing head unit. Gritz has told you how to find the switch for the power injection to power the amp.
Yes, it is a directional antenna. I use the Antenna Point App on my phone to decide where to point it at each campsite.
The basic batwing antenna is good for VHF stations (OG 2-13). Not so good for UHF stations which a lot of the stations have moved to since the digital signal conversion. It you don't have it, purchase the Winegard Wingman UHF antenna bolt-on. It really helps with those UHF stations.
