Even with the batteries disconnected the electrodes within lead acid batteries are always active and thus expelling the gases that cause corrosion. The time it takes to notice the white powder, initial stages of corrosion depends on the amount of ventilation within the battery box.
It is normal and something that has to be handled during routine maintenance.
