Look into tire liners. Its a nylon/plastic strip that you insert between the tire and the tube. The center part of the liner is a bit thicker, and pretty tough. The edges are thinner and more pliable. I've used them for years on both road and mt bikes.
Slime can get quite messy when its a bad puncture.
