I use mainly 1/2 inch MDO and it has a better strength to weight ratio than MDF as well as being more stable and easier to work with. There are some trick you can use in areas that you cant see like using a hole cutter to make 2" holes to reduce weight even further. After all my cabinet rebuilds, I weight stuff as ai put it in and took old out, I am about 40lb better off. Thats a good saving considering I think i also gained a lot of storage space in the process.
