Second, in the examples above the issue you're facing is thru-put. Doesn't matter how good your tv is if you're streaming across a piss poor network connection. Resolve your connectivity and you'll have a better experience. Anyway, to each their own. Im very happy you have a solution that works well for you. In the end, thats all that matters.

In my example it was thru put capability that was a fault of the new Smart TV that was resolved by a simple $30 Roku box was the point I was trying to make. Quality is define as fitness for use. My Mother did not have to buy or get as a gift a new Smart TV to accomplish what she sought. The fact that she got a new Smart TV just exposed a deficiency on that model and opened her eyes what all the the little Roku box or similar could do to her TV. She would have been fine with her old TV plus a firestick or similar once that was known.
On the other point, I believe you can select resolution you want on Roku and if TV cannot handle it will automatically drop. Likewise, you can have it set to Auto ( my setting) and it will automatically set at the best resolution it can negotiate with the TV without sending an error code.
