I wouldn’t go the route you are planning. I would replace the alternator and put a DC to DC charger rated at 40 amps, maybe 60 to limit current and keep it from overheating.

The fundamental problem is a bad design of the second alternator system. Limiting the current should solve it.

Do I need to replace with the same make/model “Balmar” alternator? What issues do I run into using a different alternator?

Where can I find additional info on “DC to DC” charger?
