There is suppose to be a space so the Sumo doesn't engage until needed. If the Sumo was snug every time you hit a bump your teeth would chatter and the ride would be too stiff. It is designed so if a big truck passes or you turn a corner, or you hit a bump the Sumo will stop too much movement. It is not meant to take the place of the stock suspension which gives a smooth ride.
