Thanks, kudos, and a gripe

Well folks, we had a great summer of work/camping in Maine. The old 2005 Hurricane got us there and was a decent place to live for wife, dog, cat and yours truly. No significant problems arose all summer.
The trip home was different. After stopping a couple of days to visit friends in Louisville KY, the rig wouldn't start. Turn the key and NOTHING. No click of a weak battery, no dash lights, just nothing. Battery voltage good, just no response to the key.
A call to Good Sam brought a mobile RV service to us but was stumped. Nice guy, no charge for no service completed. Next came a tow truck to a RV service company. When we got there, of course, the rig started. They played with it off and on for three hours and could not make it fail again.
This was worrisome. Intermittent failures are the hardest to trace. Reluctantly we left there and resumed our trip back to Florida. We stopped for lunch in a Target store parking lot on the north side of Atlanta. After lunch, we were dead again. Another call to Good Sam brought another tow truck. After dropping the toad our rig was towed to Open Road RV Service Dept. in Acworth GA. By the time we arrived they were getting ready to close for the evening but promised to get on it first thing in the morning.
We hit a motel for the night and went to Open Road after a late breakfast. They had already found the problem. A relay on a circuit board was failing with heat. No such circuit board was on hand for an eleven year old rig but they said they could find us one. We took the toad and headed home with the critters.
A week later the new board was in place, things had been checked out to see if anything else might cause that failure again, and they called us. So we went and brought the rig home.
We want to thank Good Sam Roadside Service for helping out and covering both tows plus guiding us to Open Road. Kudos to Open Road for good diagnostic work and a helpful attitude. Great people.
Finally, if I were an engineer designing a motorhome and I needed find a place for a potentially heat sensitive piece of electronics, I would most certainly put it in the engine compartment directly above the radiator. It is just the most obvious place, right?
As for now, Open Road is on my list of good places to go for service.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Chuck Peck, home again in Florida with CasaLoca
