According to this
link, the speed indicator is used by the cruise control. So you should be able to tap into it there. The Pioneer manual states that it is required for accurate GPS.
I have the model without the GPS. You will love it. Apple Carplay rocks! The screen is brighter. There is a setting to add graphic bars to the rear camera to help with distance detection. I also love that I can angle the screen for better viewing.
