I really understand that problem. My batteries are on a pull out steel tray but it does not safely pull out far enough to see into the innermost battery fill holes. To top off requires flashlight, mirror, and a basting syringe, a three hand chore. Mom only gave me two so there is some hope and guessing required. When these need replacement, I will gladly opt for sealed cells of some sort.
Thanks to all for the discussion of 6 vs 12, I have learned a lot of useful stuff.
