Just giving a suggestion based on my own situation. I am retired and we travel in our 36' Miramar. I own a business and do my accounting daily with QuickBooks after receiving my daily reports via DropBox. I use my cell phone (US Cellular) as the hotspot, MacBook Air for my computer and a wireless Blue Tooth printer. In some remote areas my reception is so weak it makes it very slow to use this set up. Because of security concerns I never use free wifi. The extender solves this problem. I have never had a problem with the MacBook's location in relationship to the cell phone hotspot that's why I assumed the problem was the hotspot's reception of the cell signal. Hope you solve your problem.
