you don't mention what yr/mk/mdl coach you have, or what brand/type awning you have - are you referring to awning COVERS for the slideouts?
:awning covers for newer slide outs typically have a 'stop' that is integrated into the top of the arm, on one end. it looks like a 'finger' poking out, and as it rotates with the awning, if it tries to unfurl, it catches the 'stop' block device mounted on the side of the coach to keep it from unfurling while riding. you'll also hear a decided and loud 'rap' at the top of the coach when it ever does this... the first few times it may be a little unnerving, but at least you know it's working!
