The Axis/Vegas units have the opposite problem: On the passenger side the mudflaps sometimes go backwards into the exhaust pipe and melt.
I solved the issue with some
mudflap weights (same ones that heavy truckers use). Not sure this would help here as the weights could also run up over the tire and probably cause more damage than just the mudflap alone.
