Really? From looking at my Axis it would appear that the battery can come out the front?
I've had my doghouse off:
The red arrow at the right shows the oil filler tube that is plumbed to the front of the engine so that you can add oil from the front (I haven't changed my oil: I just had a local shop do it and I'm pretty sure they didn't disassemble the dash at all).
