The inverter "makes" 110 by using battery power. The generator "makes" 110 by using gas and it also charges the batteries. So you don't need both at the same time to run the fridge, but at some point the batteries will run down.
You may have to learn by experience, how long you can go until its time to either crank up the generator or the engine for a while to charge back up.
