I was taught by an even older trucker and started on a 58' B model Mack with twin stick then eventually road-rangers. His deal for going down was 1 gear lower than the gear you went up and no shifting.
Of course, times were different with multiple gear sticks, clutches and even axles but even now with only one stick (auto trans) I lock it into whatever was the lowest gear going up when I'm going down.
Don't worry about what's behind you it's what is coming in front of you that matters. Most steep grades have courtesy pull offs for the trucks that need to travel that road. Don't worry, slow is expected in the mountains.
