I called Thor's 24 hour service. He said not to be afraid of breaking something. Just pull it down and push it in to lock. I pulled it down and locked it. That took way too much work to open and close it. If I didn't way 200 lbs. I would be doing chin-ups on the hood.
This really is a bad design for a hood release. Those pneumatic rods are too strong.
