I’m new to this form. I just bought a 36 foot 2021 Thor wind sport 34R with 24,000 miles on it. I drove with approximately 140 miles home and the check engine light came on. I hooked a scanner up to it and got a 420 error code saying bank one catalytic converter. Has anyone had this issue? I’m trying to get Ford to take care of this under their five-year or 60,000 mile warranty. Or the EPA fragile emissions law that states emission components 80,000 miles or eight years. If anyone has any information on this issue please let me know. Thanks, Joe Coffey

Maybe thief's sawed off the catalytic converter and the previous owner replaced it with a straight pipe or non-compliant part.

Another strong possibility is that the engine suffered from the known issue of spark plug wire failure on the earlier 7.3L engines which may have caused a significant amount of unburned fuel to be dumped into the bank 1 exhaust (misfires). Raw fuel in the converter is a frequent underlying cause for later catalyst failure.

Have the dealer check OASIS to see if any previous history of repairs exists that might have been handled by Ford under warranty.

Check and make sure all four oxygen sensors are in place in the exhaust system . One sensor before and one after each catalytic converter.

Oh, I’ve got Ford warranty department saying they’re gonna take care of it under the emissions five-year or 60,000 mile warranty Because it is not a light duty pick up truck. The nearest Ford dealer that will work on my RVis 100 miles from here and I found a certified shop about 5 miles from my house that I trustthat Ford has okayed to do the work under warranty. I’ll keep my fingers crossed. I’ll let you know what happens. Thanks for your input.

It’s giving you a 420 error code? Maybe it just wants a different strain! Or an increase in dose.

Joe I find it interesting that Ford is going to cover it under a warranty since it appears you bought it used. I have the same issue on my Thor which is a 2020 with 16,000 miles. First I got a code requiring Bank 1 Oxygen sensor needed replaced. Did that, drove about 200 miles then got a code for Bank 2 heat sensor. I replaced all remaining sensors. Drove another 200 miles or so and now the 420 code.

Ford is required under federal emissions regulations to warranty the emissions system and its performance for a specific amount of time or mileage, whichever comes first. The Ford warranty goes with the vehicle and is separate from the coach builder's warranty which may or may not transfer to subsequent owners.

You will need to read the warranty specifics for your model year chassis and you will need to see what Ford shows as its in-service (warranty start) date to see if you are still under warranty. Yours is likely 5/50.

In your case, based on the simple information provided, that early failure you attributed to an O2 sensor caused the cat to be damaged.

Has this rv had the dreaded ignition coil issue? If these problems do not get fixed right away;could possibly affect the O2 sensors. Even the cat.

Driving with these O2 sensor issues usually cause the cats to melt down if not attended right away.
