Alaska RV Tips

We are planning a trip to Alaska to visit friends that are moving there as we speak. They just pulled a trailer behind a U-haul truck as well as another behind a jeep. They drove to the North Pole in 7 days, are flying back and will do it one more time to get the motorhome and tow vehicle there. They ran into snow and ice on the last day but other than that the road was pretty good. We are not going to visit until 2017.
This thread peaked my interest so I have been playing on the internet. Here is a link that I though interesting. If I run across others I will post them. Wish you all safe journeys this summer.

We are also planning a 2016 Alaska trip, but I think we'll leave the RW in Oregon and purchase a vehicle and trailer (used) for that trip. Our reasons are 1). We want to stay a year and get the full-Alaska adventure. This means winterizing whatever we end up hauling and renting an apartment (or two) for the cold spell - perhaps eight months. 2). We're full-timing since last August, and the 38GK is our only home now. We're concerned that the Alaska trip will shorten it's life, perhaps significantly. When we return to OR in June 2017, it would be nice to re-sell that unit for whatever we can, and resume our travels in the fresh RW. But we'll follow this thread: hopefully y'all won't mind if we caught up with you somewhere. ��
 
Alaska update: We've decided to shorten the trip and not spend a full year. We purchased a 23' 2012 Jayco for the trip, as well as for some trips this fall around the PNW, and will sell that upon returning. We plan to leave Oregon in mid-May or as weather allows, and start heading back to the lower 48 in mid-Sept., or as weather dictates. That should get us into the Tetons in time for autumn color. Then back to OR to spend the winter, or perhaps head somewhere else. Anyone else still thinking about Alaska?
After 6 months in a 23' camper, the 38GK will seem enormous! :)
 
We took 4 months 3 days to make the trip. 14565 miles from Mich and back. Amazing trip we realy likes British Columbia. Roads weren't 4 bad just need to slow down at times. Nice campgrounds are not the norm but their are a fiew. Won't go again as their many things to see in the lower 48. We did this with a light weight trailer which we traded for a Redwood 3 weeks after we got home. Wish we had the Redwood to make that trip.Would have been nice to have exhaust break for those 17 mile grades.
 
We made the trip in 07 with our Lance TC. I could never imagine taking our Redwood up there. We have thought about going again. We would again take the TC.

I think Milepost is a must! This book is a treasure chest of info.
We were in the Yukon and NWT this year. We'll be doing Yukon and Alaska next trip. For those who are planning trips up here, goggle "signpost Forest". We're going to get a sign made up for our next trip.
 
I will agree with Michelle & Ann, The Milepost is so detailed that it is turned into a bulky paperweight for us, we did purchase the (Traveler's Guide To Alaska Camping), by Mike & Terri Church, it covers all the campgrounds in great detail in Alaska and the Yukon. We used this all the time. very usefull. We would recommend it to anyone traveling to Alaska in an RV.

Been there on a cruise & don't plan to take RW, maybe another cruise. That way someone else does the driving while I do the drinking!
We are doing well! Wintering in Arizona. C'mon down!
 
Helen, we took our Redwood to Alaska last year. We traveled with Fantasy RV and there were 24 Rigs all together. We've talked with our good friends who did the trip with us and we both agree we wouldn't be afraid to go again on our own, but would probably travel together. Always nice to have company on a trip like that and you wouldn't be alone if you had any problems.
We had to issues with our RW, but we had beefed up the suspension with the Mor/ryde 8K Independent Suspension and Goodyear 17.5" H rated tires.
