Tallpines is your transfer switch located in the battery box cavity and which progressive unit did you purchase

I installed mine before the transfer switch and I have the Gen prep. And yes if you do not bond the ground from the generator that you use the surge protector will do its job and not let the power by. Why do I know this? Because I spent a day checking for a open ground that the surge protector found. I checked every outlet and found nothing. Started searching on other sites and found almost the exact same question that I was having by someone else. The portable gen's (E-2)have a open ground because they are designed to plug into your house and your house has the closed side of the ground with a copper grounding rod that is driven into the ground. Its a easy fix. Just take a male electrical plug and cut a piece of #12 bare wire. Hook one end to the ground and the other one to the silver or neutral side of the plug and plug into your 115 side of the generator. This complete the ground and now your surge protector with let power through. Some say doing the ground this way could be bad. Some say it makes no difference. All I know is that 1 min worth of work to hook up the ground to the neutral and plug in.
 
Yes, the transfer switch is located in the front compartment just above the generator box.
I bought the EMS-HW50C which includes the remote display.
I recorded a video today showing it installed so once it is uploaded I will add a link.

Thanks for the video...Too bad you didn't video as you were doing the install. You could probably have sold it to Progressive as their video is lacking somewhat.

Sorry it did not upload ... I'm down the hill at our cottage and my wireless internet is a tad slow down here. I'll go up to the house today (same property) and upload from there.
 
Anyone going to Rally 2012 taking pictures or videos...Would you mind if factory can set it up get a picture or vid of the transfer switch with cover off and at least the power cord lines connected

I still got a little confused about the 2 wires from the transfer swtch...Looking at th transfer switch I believe you are saying the Black wire on the right is never touched....But the black wireon the transfer switch is moved to the input or left side of the surge protector and a new wire of whatever color replaces the black wire in the center of the switch and the other end is connected to the right side or output side f the surge protector....Or am I still confused?
 
No confusion ... you are totally correct!

I didn't mention it in the video , but inside the surge protector, the input side of surge protector is labelled L1-L2-L3 and that is where you connect the power cable that was removed from the transfer switch.

The new cable will connect to the load side of the surge protector that is labelled T1-T2-T3. A "current" transformer slides over the black wire and a second "current" transformer slides over the red wire before you make the connection. These measure the current that will be displayed on the remote display as "L1" and "L2".

It is a little confusing as Progressive is using L1-L2-L3 as input designation. BUT ... the remote display is actually showing T1 and T3 but shows up as L1 and L2. It would have been much clearer if the display matched the connections but not really a biggie as once installed we simply monitor the trailer loads as L1 and L2.

Great job Ian! Its tight in there isn't it. One question though. So your surge protector only protects the shore power side. I see you have a generator. Why didnt you include your generator in the protection also? Or is in not necessary?
 
I guess it is not necessary ... both Progressive Industries and Redwood recommended installing BEFORE the transfer switch.
Progressive installation manual includes both methods, BEFORE and AFTER the transfer switch so I called them and asked which is preferred method and they told me to install BEFORE.
Somewhere I read that Brian (Redwood) also recommended the same method ... so that was the way I did it!
If someone makes a technical case that it should be installed after the transfer switch ... then I would consider switching but I see no reason to do so at this time!
 
I have been told by several generator sales people that most of the generators today have their own surge protectors built in
 
Thanks Ian! I guess I should have dug deeper and asked more questions. If Redwood recommends before the transfer switch then Im going to change mine.

The problem with installing after the transfer switch is you have to modify the output of the generator to bond the Neutral and Ground together or the Surge Protector will not let the generator output thru. I guess there's really nothing wrong doing that, but most don't recommend it, so the typical install goes before the transfer switch.
 
I'm taking itone step further and wiring in a 14-50R plug - also before the transfer switch. I plan to use Redwood'sgenerator to power my house in case of power outages.
I wired my house with two sets of 6/3 wires - one from my circuit box toa 50AOutlet to power the 5th Wheel, and one froma 50A Inletto feed the Onan's output back to the transfer switch next to my home's circuit box. When the power goes out, I can use the same 50A cable that comes with the Redwood - just reverse it.

Last year, the power went out here in CT for a week+ twice within 6 weeks!
