Blazing down the interstate?

For you guys in a hurry, if the speed limit sign says 65, how much do you feel you can safely exceed that and not get a speeding ticket?
9 over is my somewhat safe zone---IF I choose to exceed the limit.
That said, 99% of the time I use that 'formula' is in my car; not motor home.

Flow of traffic.

We drive at what I call 90%.
If no one has passed me in an open stretch between dog-pile groups of drivers I try slow down until about 5(max)in 100 cars pass me.
This needs tuning, circumstance depending.

If in a pack of cars I'll lead the way out to the next pack and through that one to the next.
I open holes for the faster drivers, make holes for the faster, swap lanes to get them through. When I'm lucky there's me and two Truckers watching out for each other. It takes about five minutes for a small bit of the group figure it out and start cooperating...while the rest of the group remain the mobile-chicanes they are.
A minor sadness when I lose one at an exit and have to find another good driver to go through a hundred miles or so of CONSCIOUS driving.
In turn, I have fallen out of packs too fast for me. These are usually Metropolitan folk who know what they're doing on their home turf.
And
If I'm caught up in a particular pack of stupid I can't get through...we pull off for a nap or ice cream or fuel.

We drive with the flow of traffic and in turn help to cause it to flow.

If by ourselves, as we often are, we drive the speed limit, regardless of what we're driving.
Our driving style is not that We're in a hurry. It's that We are considerate of others.

Rush hour and accident based hold-ups don't bother me.
but
Someone playing gas-mileage games...that bothers me.

Speeding ticket? If the cops pull out after me, I put the petal to the metal. That is why I like Waze, it tells you how far you are from the entering the next State.

I use common sense when reading a speed limit. It may say 65 mph, but my actual speed will be based on mitigating factors and surroundings. If no weather issues, no traffic, wide open range, and daylight; I may hit 75mph. But in most cases; I will do 70 mph, if it is night, raining or snowing; I may drop to 60mph, If ice is present, I may drop down to 40 mph. It has been 20 years since I have got a speeding ticket. Not sure why they pulled me over, I was barely over 90 mph, it was brand new Camaro. :car:

I have never had a speeding ticket(that i remember). I have had very fast /quick cars every day of my life since I was 17.

We just don't speed(outside of norms) unless in a collective of like drivers.
We'll hit 90mph to pass some goof but it's right back to the speed limit or traffic flow or 4 over, almost never 5 over.
And
We hammer that pedal to. the. floor. when passing a big truck.
Why would you want to hang out next to someone potentially trying to pee into a pop bottle or watching a movie on their laptop(insert additional stereotype here)?
That 2mph faster than the truck you're passing 'i don't want to turn off my cruise control so I'll spend five minutes holding up traffic' particularly silly thing is dangerous/impacting to everyone involved.

If we have to tell some folks who have owned their rv for five years...where their battery is...how do we think we wouldn't have to tell them how to drive it?

In my 4 wheeler, in Florida, not in known speed trap areas, I can cruise right by a State Trooper at +10 MPH and they won't take a second look.

and why do insist to say those that drive the speed limit, or a little above are in a hurry? :confusedgif: If I am truly in a hurry, I just leave earlier, or limit my stopping to get gas only.

If I park up front at a Wal mart parking lot, and speed up walking across the marked crosswalk, because I see a car doing 10 mph coming toward me that may not have brakes, and a driver yakking on a cellphone; does it mean I am in a hurry to buy a oil filter? :respect: A lot of it is respect. I can't tell you how many times I need to pass a car I am approaching and I see a car in rear side mirror, so I try to wait so the car can pass me, but as soon as the oncoming car see I am not going to pull out they tend to slow down and box me in where I have to hit my brakes as to not tailgate the car in front or me, or worse pull out in the fast lane on the tail gate of the creeping passer buy. Most oncoming cars appreciate you waiting to allow them pass and they speed up to get on by out of your way. The Duck's point is right about one speed drivers or Cruise control users. The slowpokes should be banned off the freeways in my humble opinion. When I retire, I am going learn English, buy me a 18 wheeler, and teach them all :oldman:

When my plan, pre 24.1 knowledge, was to spend $125,000 to build an 1980's Autocar based 4x4 diesel 600hp monster(think: 600hp 90mph 6x6wd concrete mixer);

It was only so I wouldn't be an impediment to other drivers by having an inadequately powered rv.

Once I drove a 24.1(while investigating floor plans for the monster i planned) I found it more than adequate(and I had quit a hobby requiring a two car trailer )
I knew if I was holding up traffic it was going to be a me thing and not a machine thing.

Honestly, that was my biggest consideration.

So, I bought the 24.1 and made it mine.
Straight axle, leaf front springs, manual transfer case...and fast/quick enough to beat sleepy folks off the line and pass anything that needs passed.

You joke, but I believe that damn Duck has a 4 wheel drive RV for real? So he may double and be the reigning Jeep 4x4 Stock RV Champion too.

Six wheel drive.
Locking hubs.
Front leaf springs.
Big ol' manual transfer case.
4" lift.
front hitch
12,000lb portable winch.
All as mods.

The kiilmat in the picture is on what used to be the battery box under the steps.
It's now a well insulated tool box(empty. We travel pretty light).
Axis and Vegas owners;
A squat-ton of noise and discontent comes from that battery bin. It's hard to 📌 pinpoint, but it does.

The leaf springs pictured are the front springs. See that tiny tiny steering damper? Tiny and $30ish.

We are new to the motor home experience and taking our first 500 mile trip in our 2020 Thor Windsport 29M. What kind of highway speed should I realistically expect on the interstate towing and not towing?
I have found that the answer to your question depends on the capabilities and/or shortcomings of the Motorhome and driver. Although some rigs are capable of getting on down the road the driver might not be suited to controlling a rig at high speeds. My rig will do over 80 if I’m not watching what I am doing. To me that speed is too fast based on the height of the rig (13’4”), especially with a cross wind. My suggestion is start slow and get used to how the rig handles and then increase your speed until you find your, repeat, your sweet spot. Normally I am at speed limit + 3 mph or 65 - 68 whichever is less. I also limit my travel day to ~350 miles per day. After that my old age bones start to ache.

Ha!
Forget all that other stuff I said, this is what I meant all along.

Do your best until your best is good enough.

Be A+, not mediocre.
A+ can back down to mediocre when needed.
Mediocre can't advance.

You all decide who's who as you drive around.

In Travis County Texas you will not get a speeding ticket no matter how fast you are going. The police and sheriffs department are so under staffed that they rarely ticket anyone just for speeding.

That’s true. I remember reading one of his posts about that.

What’s next jet fuel?

I think it’s awesome and applaud his talent!

My trip to town 10 minutes ago.
I don't know of a positive way to think about this.
My speedometer says 52 in a 65.

They went as low as...

I want to believe everyone has a line that delineates absurdity vs justification or mpg or fear or inability.

We leave the distance when we can. We were last in this little seven mile congo line.
We're capable of locking bumpers in a draft if needed, but it hasn't been needed for quite a while.

Think of it as you may be patronizing someone's mental health issues. They probably up front embolden and thinking.... lookie at all of the people following me.
