Camping World reaches $3.5M settlement after investigation found they double charged customers

https://www.koin.com/news/oregon/camping-world-reaches-3-5-million-settlement-after-double-charging/

The problem that I have with Dealers like this, they have no remorse, they are probably working now on overtime on how to prey on even more vacuous customers to recover the $3.5 million that they likely view as being stolen from them by big government.

The irony is a thread in flight right now explaining about the pitfalls of the purchasing process. https://www.thorforums.com/forums/f...mmendations-first-time-rv-owners-34615-2.html
For every one that is educated (if they will listen without being offended), there are 500 more misguided souls that are prey to most of these dealers.

I remember some Auto Dealer in Orlando, Florida that would not even talk to us about a vehicle that had a too good to be true online price that I wanted to buy. They would ask where I live and as soon as I say Texas they would hang up or say they would call back. They never called back. I finally got smart and gave them another state and they proceeded with predatory tactic. I would later learn they were unable to register a license in the state of Texas. I was indirectly protected by Big Government.

If anyone thinks this is only fraudulent, deceptive sales tactic by Camping World, they are extremely misguided if not simply naïve.

This is due to a lack of educated finance managers.
The accessory line is where you put that $3,000.
Then the sheep sign a due bill saying they accepted the floor mats or mop and glo or fabric protection.

It's a standard practice.
It has been a standard practice since ogg sold dinosaurs and included a free BrontoBurger.

$3million¿
Camping world gross profit was 340+million on 6+billion intake.
This tax deductible fine, if not lowered to $100,000 with a grace letter,
Is
Three days gross net profit.

No one at camping world cares about this settlement.
It's petty cash OR is expireable coupons toward the purchase of black tank perfume.

So you saying CW need to hire from Ivy League schools to get better educated Finance managers that can fleece most customers without getting caught?

Yeah I concede it is less than 1% of their profit, but if they are only returning 5.6%, they are at a very high risk. They could be bought out, shut down and get a lot more in returns.

I went to a brand new CW store about 3 months ago to buy some of those hydraulic lift or leveling pads, and you should have seen their antiquated checkout method. It took the guy 10 minutes to ring up a $25 purchase. Then I pulled out my credit card and I thought he was going to have a heart attack. So I paid cash to avoid some fees and then he could not find change. He had a little money box but did not have the key. I saw they had cameras so I stayed calm. I eventually bought an extra leveler pad to make it closer to my cash and told him to keep the change.

With that said as long as we have people that buy their groceries from 7/11 or similar convenience stores, CW will always have customers.

I can't believe the low margins some companies run on.
But
I also can't believe companies trade at so many multiples of value.

So...generally...and in almost all factions of all folks;
People are financially really really...no...REALLY.

Yes, I know people make money on the stock transactions.
I also know people make money on fools who buy rvs.

Our fairly new CW store here in Branson is as you would expect. Nothing at all like what you ran into, was it a retrofit store or a completely new one?

Stop by the Branson Store and be surprised as to how well it looks and performs, must be a difference in regional management or something and the one just up the road off I44 is pretty much the same and much older.

I don't buy much there but things like a wall rocker switch or something i want to see rather than online then it is only a couple miles away and easy to get to.

A lot of Camping Worlds are franchises. That's why you have such a disparity between the good ones and bad ones.

It is actually a new store 1 or 2 years old? But it is not as large as the others in area.

Anybody wants to go buy something and watch this process play out, please go to https://rv.campingworld.com/dealer/lewisville-texas

I don't doubt some CW stores may have some level of automation... I take that back, I do doubt that. Until I see otherwise. I do not plan to go to Branson any time soon.

In addition to the what the State of Oregon Dept of Justice says, I have been in & shopped at 3 CW stores. I gave you the experience with one. There our two more.

2nd CW Denton, TX when I wanted to get my Navigator rigged for towing, they had a $6,500 estimate, but worse they insisted they had to cut my frot bumper for the base plate. I argued until I turned blue because I had pictures from Roadmaster on the install for vehicle. I just left and did it on my own, a complete waste of time. My bumper did not require cutting, in fact you can't look at my vehicle and tell it is a towed.

3rd CW Little Rock, AR, I have mentioned this story many times, but summary is they would NOT let my wife and I view a 2019 WBGO Sunstar 29ve because we refused to surrender our licenses. We were not wanting to drive the damn thing, but look at it. We had driven 5 hours. They knew that, but I don't flex easily, we left. We bought RV a month later in Florida. They actually still have the nerve to call us every year trying to get us to come by. We gave them our names, & phone number but they wanted more.

With all that said if I need something like parts (not service) and they have it at that 1st store with slow checkout process, I will still go. I will just be sure to have a few drinks before going so I can stay relaxed better.

That’s just the way it is, some things will never change

Now that I have owned my first real RV, a Tellaro AT, I would never buy another from a dealer. I know what I want, I know what I need. I’d buy an empty Ram 3500 chassis and have a local craftsman build it out for me, and stop by periodically to see the progress and actually learn how it is put together. The year waiting would be well worth it. Like so many, I wanted a rig, had the money, and wanted to go choose one off the lot and drive it home a week later.
