I’m in an area that will experience a freeze now and then. We are moving in December (traveling by rv). Any advice/tips for cold weather while we wait to travel? RV is in the driveway, no shore power available. Water heater is currently drained. I plan on sanitizing and leaving the fresh water tank dry until it’s time to leave. Currently have about 5 gallons of water in the blank tank.

How long are the cold snaps? If you're talking about down to freezing overnight but warming up during the day, I wouldn't worry to much. If you're talking freezing temps for a day or two, then winterize. But just because you're winterized, doesn't mean you can't use the RV for every other system.

Thank you. Typically, there will be overnight freeze. Just below freezing, maybe high 20s. However, getting into late December could cause some issues. My initial thoughts matched your advice. Sounds like the best bet is to keep an eye on the weather forecast and be prepared to winterize. Thanks for the advice!

I live in Central Texas so it doesn't get real cold very often. For nights when the forecast is projected to be under 30, I'll turn on a space heater, open the cabinets and press on. When it is forecast for temps to remain in the 20s and 30s, day and night, I winterize. We lived in our last RV for a whole winter because of a flood and the only steps I took were to disconnect the city water line for nights below freezing.

Thank you.
I can remember going to classes in December and wearing shorts and a tshirt in San Marcos!

Run an extension cord and plug in a radiator style heater.

You might want to consider blowing out your water lines with air so they don't freeze. If you are able to keep it warm inside with the radiator heater, the traps in the sink/toilets should be ok. If not, pour in some RV Antifreeze (pink stuff) into each sink and drain to keep them from freezing. I would not put it into your fresh water tank.

I should have followed up on this. I drained the entire water system and bypassed the HW heater. I used anti-freeze And kept it winterized while travelled from TN to CA. We used water bottles and and a 1 gallon jug refilled at parks along the way for the toilet and park showers. There were more than a few nights below freezing, including around 11 at Williams, AZ. Dewinterized once temps stayed above freezing. No issues observed on the last 4 day trip.
