Hello Group,

Having owned several Motorhomes over the years, using the Generator power in a Motorhome to power parts of our House in an Emergency has come up several times. In the older Motorhomes there was an outlet from the generator that you plugged into a cord from the Motorhome to power it. In an emergency all you had to do was plug in another cord going to your house and you were in business. On newer Motorhomes there is an switch inside the motorhome which will automatically switch from shore power to generator power. This is a good feature for the motorhome, but it makes connecting the generator power to your house in an emeregency more difficult. I solved this problem recently, by finding a junction box where power first comes out of the Generator. This was a normal double junction box located in a storage compartment close to the generator. There I installed a short cable to a connector that matches the one on my motorhome for Shore Power ($15). That way I can use the same cable to the house that normally goes to the motorhome. Also I found in the junction box that wire nuts were no longer used, but instead these Waygu snap in connectors, which makes the added cabling easier. All you have to do is replace the 2 connection Waygu units with 3 connection units and add it the new cable. Now with Hurrican season approaching, I am ready for Emergency Power to my house if needed.

I'm not getting it.
My rv has receptacles built into the outside of the rv on the right and left sides.
I haven't used them so I dont know if the generator is somebow not hooked up to them.

What did I miss about adding a receptacle box?

The outside Outlets are only goo for 15 or 20 amps. Adding the connector I did will allow the full power of the Generator to connect to the House.

That is what I did, too. Please also have an appropriate transfer switch installed in your house to isolate the power mains from your generator power.

If you are using the full power of your generator how to you get the power to the house? It's a good distance for most people, so what kind of cord do you use?

We live in South Georgia and hurricanes are an issue for us. We've used our RV for power 3 times, up to 3 days at a time. We can power our fridge, charge phones, etc. Not as good as a standby home system but we already own this generator, and it supplies our urgent needs.

My home has a 200 amp service panel. Not that my RV generator wouldn't power the freezer but other than that, I can wait for the power interruption to end before I do a load of laundry or bake a pie. For comfort, I just use the RV.

Really should be wired by licensed electrician. Make sure you have it setup so house main breaker has to be open before the generator can feed home. SAVE A LINEMAN!
Retired lineman.

As above.

I'm very vaguely remembering an interpretation prohibiting portable generators in certain districts regardless of reason you're powering the whole house.

I don't care.
This isn't a safety sally speech.
It's so some lineman doesn't kick your butt when he catches you.

To be clear we simply run an extension cord to the house and plug in our fridge and chargers . We don't tie in to the main circuit board.

Hello,
The picture I attached shows a socket that matches the one on the coach for shore power. That way I can use the coach shore power cord, which is rated for the full power of the generator. In my case I keep the motorhome at the end of our home so it is only about 5 feet from the outllet on the house where I connect for shore power to charge the batteries. If your motorhome does not have a power cord that detaches from the coach you would have to use a different cable and connector for the line to the house.

So added a new 30 amp twist-lok connector directly to the generator output and are back feeding the generator's 30 amp output to one side of the house's split phase system through the same TT30 receptacle you use when powering the RV from SP?
If so that's quite the suicide cord.

I believe illegal, and certainly if not illegal actionable, and you won't have a defense...even in Bangladesh.

But I have one.
But I'm not like 90% of members here who don't know twist lock from a henway.

Just
Don't

The above are giving to plenty of information and WARNING ⚠️ if you are doing this during a power outage and linemen will see your lights on and hear the generator you will have a BIG problem ,the police will be the least of your problems.

I've had my lights on and generator running during many power outages; even supplying power to two neighbors for their fridges/freezers and minimum loads like lighting and radios through long extension cords. I live in Florida after all. I have never had any problem with either police or lineman.

But I do have to rely on my neighbors to tell me when power has been restored as my main breakers are open.

Glad your main is open but I don't think the OP understands any of this. Most people don't know a transformer that take 14,000 volts and steps it down to 120 volts to there house also works backwards taking your 120 volts generator power back up to 14,000. I've seen this many times from portable generator to tractor PTO's. From downed wires starting fires to electrocution.
