Def Filling and not filling

I just went for my second DEF tank fill, and I couldn't use the bulk fill at a truck stop. I previously did at a different station. Because it worked on my first fill I assumed that the filler had the magnetic ring. But I just read that not every fill station has the magnetic fill requirement on their nozzles. Obviously my filler doesn't have that ring.

Having said that, where can I get a magnetic ring, or ring cap, for my Magnitude's DEF tank. I looked online and didn't find one, but maybe I am no searching for the correct name or description. Hate the jugs!

This is probably what you are talking about....

But tow often are you adding DEF?

I have a 2020 SV34 and after 10,000 miles I have filled the DEF twice I think. I've never needed to add DEF on a trip.

I get one or two 2.5 Gallon Jugs at Wal-Mart or Rural King fill it and forget it.
How in the world do you fill it without making a mess?! That angle kills me. I tried an electrical pump-made a big mess.:peace:

Ford Part number PM-27 N, its a DEF filler hose that has a stop valve when the DEF tank is full. It fits the small and large jugs of DEF. I always carry a small jug with me when we travel and another hint do not buy it online , go to a Ford dealer where they are $7.00 or so.

I go about 1600 miles on just over 2 gallons of DEF. I believe my DEF tank holds about 5 gallons. There is no need to fill the DEF every time you stop for fuel. I do check my DEF tank level several times while out on the road.

Paul,
You're 100% correct: 4.8 gallons... :thumb:
About every third fill-up; is when I hit mine again. About 1000 miles.

Thank you. Just ordered one from Oreilly's. Will give it a shot.

I have 7000 miles on the coach and I think this is my second time to top off the DEF. I just fill it when the dash notice tells me it is less than 500 miles of DEF.

I don't like the angle and lifting the jug to fill it. The pumps are very easy to use.

I just purchased this magnetic sleeve that lets the magnetic nozzles run.

Not sure what the issue is with a magnet, never seen a fuel nozzle that wasn't aluminum so not magnetic.
My GMC truck the DEF fill was under the hood next to the firewall, very unhandy, & regardless whether pumping or pouring it had to be very slowly or it would burp back, which a magnet wouldn't have helped.

Since the def and fuel are side by side on most pickups, there was a risk of putting bulk def in the fuel, and there was a safety measure added to prevent it. Since fillers on pickups and cars are plastic, in the absence of metal, the def won't flow and thus you won't put it down the fuel tank.

Many bulk def fueling sites have moved away from that but many still have the magnetic safety nozzle. I purchased a sleeve that fakes out the magnet and allows the fuel to flow. I would use the jugs but it is inside a cargo door and hard to reach and tip the jug where it is at. The bulk fill station is so much easier and quite a bit cheaper than the jugs.

What is a DEF?

Diesel Exhaust Fluid. It is part of the emissions on Diesel vehicles since 2011. It is basically a scrubber system that keeps particulates out of the exhaust. So anything past 2011 that smokes is deliberately tuned to do so, has the emissions deleted or is not running properly. If you have a Gas vehicle this is all irrelevant.

Your Sprinter RV uses almost 5 gls of DEF over a 1000 miles? I have only driven mine about 2000 miles since buying it in June and the DEF tank still shows over 1/2 full.

Mine does seem to use more than most...
It must be something in my driving... :whistling:

I don't know about that, in all reality Sprinter RV engine get a good "work out" just about all the time, considering that most of those RVs are at max weight on a regular basis.

I guess speed or towing make a bit of difference. I haven't towed yet and really like to stay around 65 mph.

If I can keep my speed down to 65(without towing) I usually average about 2 gallons of DEF for every 1600 to 1800 miles. We are going on a trip in March and will be towing our car on that trip. I will see how my DEF use changes. I plan on driving 55 with the car in tow.

When I fill my tank: I probably only take a gallon or so.
I do NOT want to ever get caught short out on the road. :nonono:
