Hey, am going on 2,000 mile trip and would like to keep say 3 of those 5gal yellow diesel fuel jugs as a back-up reserve. How often should I use them up and refill. can diesel sit in them for 3 or 4 days ?

Diesel can sit in them as long as you would expect diesel could sit in the tank of your truck and not go bad. 3-4 days in not an issue at all!

Diesel overall is a very light oil you should be able store diesel for six months and still be extremely fresh. Just my opinion I try to store most of my fuels in steel cans. Cost to benefit I am sure is very poor.

Yes, not a problem. Diesel doesn't go stale like Gasoline. Two years ago when we did our Alaska trip I carried two 6 gal yellow plastic Diesel containers. Used them several times during the two month trip. So it was stored for weeks at a time without any issues.

There's the kicker, unless I were going to Alaska or deep into Mexico, I would not carry spare fuel...

with phone apps like gas buddy and google and the pilot/flying j app you can find fuel everywhere...
(and this comes from someone that had a 26 gal tank in a ford short bed pulling a HEAVY 38gk 5'er - i REALLY appreciate the 100 gallons we have now!)

Be sure the container is full to help prevent condensation & if storing for extended periods add some StaBil to also help with condensation & keep the fuel fresh.

Yep, forgot the Diesel Stabil in my post above. Carried a bottle with me and added each time I refilled by cans.

for a short time storage you shouldn't have any problems. Diesel fuel can grow mold after it's stored which can play **** on the filters but it takes a long time. Even if the MH isn't being used, I take it for a 60 mile drive every couple of weeks to keep the fuel stirred up

I agree with Travlin Texans about the condensation.
